Leafing through the pages of a catalogue of 19th-century military uniforms found in the Emile Hermès collection, Virginie Jamin was struck by the power of the designs. This scarf takes its name from the uniforms of zouaves – North African light infantry units in the French Army – and dragons, or dragoons in English – cavalry soldiers who fought on foot or horseback.

Leafing through the pages of a catalogue of 19th-century military uniforms found in the Emile Hermès collection, Virginie Jamin was struck by the power of the designs. As if showing us the hidden side of the Moon, this design is part shadow, part light. A crescent moon scattered with stars borders a vast disk featuring the powerful body of Pegasus, the winged horse, a divine creature with a tousled mane. Dimitri Rybaltchenko has designed a symbolic image based on the surface of the moon composed of minuscule geometric motifs which could almost be a secret code.
